Why is 611 shopping by appointment only?

Why is 611 shopping by appointment only?

It’s a fair question, and the answer comes down to making sure 611 works for everyone who walks through our doors.

611 is a free store offering food, household essentials, clothing, home goods, gifts, and all kinds of useful finds. What we have depends on donations, what we can purchase, and what our partners help us provide. Our inventory changes all the time, so we want to be thoughtful about how many people we welcome in and avoid promising more than we can deliver.

For some people, access to resources is unpredictable. You might not know when you'll have another opportunity to find a winter coat, replace a household item, pick up a gift for someone you love, or stock up on something your family needs. When you don't know when the next opportunity will come, it makes sense to want to take advantage of what's available while you can.

But when everyone is navigating that same uncertainty, people can feel pressure to grab something before someone else does. Items disappear quickly, people may take more than they originally intended, and others can miss out. That's a human response to uncertainty, not a character flaw.

Appointments help us create a different kind of shopping experience.

We schedule five families per shopping hour so we can better manage our inventory and plan for the number of people coming through. Right now, the combined efforts of 611, our donors and contributors, and our food partner, Evanston Community Fridges, allow us to support the number of shoppers and volunteers we currently welcome. We want to make the most of those resources without growing beyond what we can sustain.

And there's another important part of this: how shopping at 611 feels matters to us.

We want you to walk in, look around, find things that are useful or bring you joy, and make thoughtful choices without feeling like you're in a race. You shouldn't have to rush, compete with another shopper, or grab something simply because you're unsure it'll be there next time.

That's why we put so much thought into how the store looks and feels. The layout, organization, and way items are presented are intentional. We want 611 to feel comfortable, welcoming, and easy to navigate, not like a place where you have to make a mad dash for what's on the shelves.

One shopping appointment can include five families, up to 40 people depending on household size, plus our volunteers. Appointments help us make the experience manageable for everyone while keeping our inventory and capacity in mind.

Shopping by appointment isn't about making access more difficult. It's about making the access we can offer more reliable, comfortable, and sustainable.

We know appointments aren't always the most convenient option, and we understand that. We're continually learning how to make 611 work better for the people who shop here, volunteer here, and help keep the shelves stocked.

The goal isn't simply to get as many people through the door as possible. It's to create a store where you can find what you need, discover something unexpected, choose something for someone you love, and shop without feeling like you have to compete with the person beside you.

We want what we have to go further, and we want everyone who walks through our doors to have the time and space to find their own good things.

That's how we make 611 work, together.
